Older People & Group Photographs During a Wedding

Older People & Group Photographs During a Wedding

By Tom Ely

During a wedding it is essential that the photographer takes the images that are desired by the bride and groom during his/her wedding.

Many of the group shots are easy… Call the guests over toward the bride and groom and many of the guests will follow (like sheep), lining up and smiling at the camera similar to the shots taken when they where at school 10 or 20 years ago…

Elderly relatives are different however. In this case, it is essential that the photographer takes a little more time and consideration when photographing such subjects.

In my experience (Photographing over 700 weddings), elderly relative group shots should be treated with much more respect… a respect which, in my opinion is due. This respect should be shown on the day and choosing this path, won’t go unnoticed by other guests relative to those older relations…

Take the Bride and Groom and walk over to the elderly relations (Nan, Grandad, Great Aunty) and photograph them nearby or immediately where the subjects are placed. Angle the photograph so that no-one else is in the background of the image (Closely crop) and you’ll get an lovely image of the Bride, Groom and perhaps his/her Nan and Grandad without them ever having to move. The image taken will be placed on the ‘Fireplace’ of the elderly relative the next time the bride and groom go around to their house!!!

As a wedding photographer, you should always consider such circumstances. Doing this will help the smooth running of the day and minimize such negative comments from Great Aunty Mary like, ‘Your wedding was lovely, but I didn’t like the photographer. He was very bossy and told me to walk across the field and I REALLY didn’t feel like it.’

Remember, if you are a photographer in your 30′s, I’m sure your could ‘Skip across that field’, but Great Aunty Mary wants to sit, drink her Brandy and be left alone for as long as possible!!!

Remember her thoughts… Its not all about photography, its about the wedding.
